Okay it's been a while since I've done one of these album reviews but what better way to start it off with Amerie. Her 4th studio-album 'In Love & War' dropped November 3rd. Amerie wrote all songs and had her hand in the production as well on the tracks. The album has a funky, fresh sound to it which has Amerie in her own lane as usual. Peep the review below!
Tell Me You Love Me-This song is so infectious! The drums, then her delivery sucks you right in. She's screaming for attention, affection, satisfaction, and basically telling a guy she is gonna make him love her. By boldly saying "TELL ME YOU LOVE ME". This is relatable because we all had that one person we loved and cared for so much but didn't love you or want you back. Get it Amerie, she shows so much swag on this record!
Heard 'Em All- This is her second single from the album. It has a very hard jamaican dutty rock essence to it and I love it. She's cocky on the record stating she heard all these men talk about the same thing coming with the same gimmick and needs something real that can put it down. I'm sure many women can atest to that.
Dangerous- Amerie talks about a love for a guy that she can't resist. She knows he is dangerous to her and she shouldn't put it all on the line but she likes it so damn much! Everyone has that person that is no good that you keep going back to...the record has a big band feel to it that makes it feel live.
Higher-Talking about a love that had her feeling so good and took her so high to drop her off. She talks about her being naive and wasn't told love would be like this. The lyrics go deep for me and has another band feel just like Dangerous. Her voice has a very raspy tone that adds more emotion to the song that's believable.
Why R U- Is the first single from her album. It has a hard early hip-hop feel to it; the beat goes so hard! The song talks about her love for a person that she can't get out of her system. Her flow is real nice and I like how she goes a different direction vocally.
Pretty Brown ft. Trey Songz- This song is really pretty. Amerie & Trey's harmonies together are fantastic. It samples a sample of Mint Condition's "Breakin' My Heart". This is suppose to be her third single off the album, it's a nice love song and I'm sure people will eat it up.
More Than Love ft. Fabolous- This is one my faves off the album, it talks about a love she has for a guy & she doesn't trust him more than love! Wow, that's deep. I can lay in the dark and listen to this song over & over. This should be another single & Fabolous adds a nice flow to the track. I like the lil fight they have too. This features a sample of "Summer Madness" performed by Kool & The Gang.
SwagBack- Is about her getting her swag, and life back after a bad relationship. "A broken heart don't fit me no more" is what she says...I like this record and the beat goes hard. I just feel like something was missing from this song though, and I can't put my finger on it.
You're A Star(Interlude)- This track talks about a man being a star, and should be with her. Not sure if I like this it kind of throws off the flow of the album. It's just an interlude so not too much to write about.
RedEye- Talking about getting a love that she wants to take to another album. She doesn't want to be his only girl, just wants to take him around the world. She's saying it's like a redeye. I like the metaphor & the beat which was produced by Brian Michael Cox. She brought it with this one! This is one of those making love songs.
The Flowers- Okay another one of the standout jams on the album to me. She left a man that didn't appreciate her. Too late to go back in time to rewind, because now she's gone. This song hits real hard to home for me. I'm sure you guys can relate as well. The production is great and her harmonies are nice as well.
Different People- Oh my GOD! Amerie speaks the truth on this song! A love where people grow apart from one another. She says you can't change who she is cause she who she be. How their love lost the mystery, she used to get flowers on random days but now only on holidays! Whew this was great!
Dear John- This is a song about Amerie writing a man named John that she's breaking up with through a letter. This seems like something that people have done & I'm sure it's relatable to many. It's a nice piano ballad with a popish feel to it.
Heard 'Em All (Remix) ft. Lil Wayne- It's the same as the original song but just features the Lil Wayne rap verses instead. It still goes hard!
Overall this was a decent album, she has some nice jams and her lyrical content was nice. I have to say this is no stellar album like Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel or Lady Love...but that's what's so special about Amerie. You can tell she gives her all and is like a hidden musical gem, I would say this is a very listenable album if you like different things as far as music goes. The artwork in the album is beautiful as well. Will you be picking up your copy?
